The newsletter went out this morning. It included reviews of two great shows. Why two? To avoid subscription irritation—whatever's being reviewed, you don't have the subscription for it. We've all been there. So, to save you the frustration, I went for two great shows.
Poker Face with the wonderful Natasha Lyonne had to get a mention. Loving the structure of these 'complete in themselves' episodes. It's definitely got the Colombo feel, but reworked and brought bang up to date. With a quirky sense of delivery, and the brilliant conceit that our heroine can tell if those baddies are telling a fib. She's got the kind of built-in fib detector that Santa would die for. There's also a great ticking clock device running alongside each episode—a gang of casino crooks are after our heroine. Clever stuff by Rian Johnson.
My second review was on the more widely available Guilt. You can catch it on the BBC (also on Amazon if you're across the pond). We're on the third series now, and I simply can't get enough. The Scottish brothers and the world of crime they keep bumping into are a constant source of fascination. Sibling rivalry is such a brilliant dynamic for stories. Also, loving that landscape. The first season also happens to have one of the best transitions ever. Worth a watch for the fantastic writing, brilliant acting, and a host of characters that are off the beaten track in more ways than one. Enjoy.
